Things have settled down a little now that the holidays are over but there still are some things for the family to do.

First up is the new film “War Horse,” directed by Steven Spielberg and brought to us by Walt Disney Pictures. It’s a love story, really, about a boy and his horse.  The movie site, Fandango, offers this synopsis:

“An epic adventure for audiences of all ages. Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets — British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.”

Be aware that the movie is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of war violence.

You can peek at the trailers below for two other films worth considering, if you haven’t already seen them.

“We Bought A Zoo” is about Los Angeles journalist Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon), who decides to make a fresh start after his wife’s death by quitting his job and moving his children (Colin Ford, Maggie Elizabeth Jones) to an 18-acre property containing the Rosemoor Wildlife Park. Though closed for years, Rosemoor is still home to many animals, cared for by Kelly Foster (Scarlett Johansson) and her small staff. Mee opens his heart and his checkbook as he, Kelly and the others work to renovate and reopen the zoo. The film is rated PG for some language and theme elements.

Speaking of reporters, the lead character in “The Adventures of Tintin” is one, too. While shopping at an outdoor market, young reporter Tintin (Jamie Bell), accompanied by his faithful dog, Snowy, buys a model of an old ship called the Unicorn. A shady character named Sakharine (Daniel Craig) and later an American named Barnaby (Joe Starr) ]try to buy the model from him, but Tintin refuses. The lad discovers that the ship contains a clue about a hidden treasure, but before he can locate it, Tintin is kidnapped and given over to the custody of drunken Capt. Haddock (Andy Serkis). This animated film, based on the popular series of European classic comic books, is rated PG for adventure action violence, some drunkenness and brief smoking. .

Next up are those crazy characters in the beloved Toy Story series.

Disney on Ice characters

Have you heard the buzz? The toys are back in town and you can catch all the action as Valley View Casino Center (formerly San Diego Sports Arena), hosts “Disney on Ice presents Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3” from January 25–29. Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the Toy Story gang escape from the rambunctious tots of Sunnyside Daycare and race for home — on skates — in their most daring adventure ever. A few new faces join the fun, including Barbie’s groovy bachelor Ken and Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear. It’s the biggest Toy Story experience on ice, jam-packed with fast-paced adventure such as Buzz’s galactic battle with Emperor Zurg and a hoedown at Woody’s Roundup.
