Hello San Diego!

Pillow Fight

All three floors of The New Children’s Museum are buzzing with activity this week.  We’re hanging, painting, sweeping, placing and imagining what it will be like when this super fun place is finally full of kids and families.

We’re so excited to open the doors on Sunday.  Have you heard about our opening exhibition, childsplay?  Nineteen artists have installed some amazing projects here in the last couple of months - including the biggest, weirdest pillow fight in town.

One week to go.  Let the countdown begin!

      How did the opening go?

Wow, it was truly a success! Over 4,200 people visited our new home on opening day. An average of 400–500 people visit daily. We’re thrilled with the community’s response, and looking forward to an exciting summer!

Thanks TNCM staff, and everyone who worked to make this place a reality. We visited on Mothers Day–after a picnic in the nearby park–and had a great time. Our 14 month old was smitten by the bean bags and bubbles, our 3 1/2 year old is still proudly showing off her clay cat face sculpture, and all four of us can’t wait to tear up the pillow fight room again.

Mr. Quigley has created an amazing space, and you all are filling it with great stuff for families.

I was disappointed by the opening. We got there at 11 a.m. and told to go line up for the free entry and stay out of the area in front of the museum because the vendors were not ready. They weren’t going to let people in until 1pm, so it seemed crazy to us to stay in line with our 4 year old for two hours. We had nothing to do there, so we went to a cafe for over an hour, and when we came back, the lines were very long just to get a few goodies at the tables and the line for the entry into the museum was ridiculous. So we went home.

Living in Laguna we hesitated for a second on taking the drive. When you’re from the beach, the backdrop of a beach isn’t enough to make for a trip. Having 4 kids and understanding the importance of art and how it truly effects a child, we knew it was a trip that would be beneficial for our crew. What we experience was much greater than a pretty building with pretty pictures. It was a clear sign that a change is coming. The base of change is filled with love and passion that is the reason this project is already a success. Thanks for the efforts and we will do our job and encourage others to take this worthy trip
