So long, painted bug!
Studios, childsplay
During the last weekend of our exhibition, childsplay, the Museum gave away pieces of paint chunks for our visitors to keep as a memory of one of our favorite studio activities—the painted volkswagen bug. Not only was it one of the most engaging, hands-on experiences at the Museum, it also became a popular art sculpture for the public to stop and look at outside, usually with a big smile.
“Is that a real car?”, “oooh! what’s that made out of…clay?”, “…so do you wash this off everyday?”, or “What a great idea!” are some of the best conversation starters we’ve had with our guests that we will certainly miss. Since opening day in may of last year, the bug has collected hundreds of gallons of paint from our visitors, both young and old. The excitement of little ones in line for a smock to paint a real car was just as inspiring to see as it was to find the layers of paint take a life of its own. Our studio artists would occasionally peel paint off the car to discover that each paint chunk formed or molded into beautiful pieces of colored rocks.
On a good day, the bug became an amazing abstract painting with a wonderful color palette.

But on the very last day of childsplay, the bug became a fun experiment for our visitors to explore with different painting tools!

As we prepare for the new exhibition, Animal Art, opening on Otober 11, we will be working hard to replace the car with something new—something even bigger! So as we say farewell to our painted volkswagen bug, the Studio Arts team would like to give a warm, San Diego thank you to all of the Museum visitors for contributing to what makes The New Children’s Museum an amazing place to think, play and create.

So long, painted bug!
