The Museum’s studio spaces allow kids to roll up their sleeves and explore creative art and design activities with a wide variety of recycled and sustainable materials. Paint, clay, paper, wood, found objects and more are the building blocks of each inventive studio project.
INDOOR WET/ART STUDIO (Woods Family Studio, Main Level)
A chance for kids to create their very own "pocket size" shadow puppet theater.
OUTDOOR WET/ART STUDIO (Woods Family Studio, Main Level)
Each child is provided with a small ball of clay, to be transformed into whatever their interest and imagination inspires them to create.
An updated version of the Museum’s famous Painted Truck! Now the Painted Bug, a 1973 VW, serves as a makeshift canvas that kids can paint on.
INDOOR DESIGN STUDIO (Sheryl & Harvey White Foundation Studio, Upper Level)
Children are invited to create their own "cycle" at a miniature scale, using simple elements like wood, glue, tape, and of course, wheels. There's even a ramp for test runs!
OUTDOOR DESIGN STUDIO (Sheryl & Harvey White Foundation Studio, Upper Level)
Kids design the tool with which to make the bubbles, and test out making different shapes that float up into the sky.
The studios respond to the ideas presented throughout the Museum galleries, and allow children to create, design and produce elements that relate to their own interpretations of their exhibition experiences. The studios also support experimentation, free form expression and the notion that art can be anything you want it to be.
Each studio is staffed with facilitators, who encourage children to work at their own pace and in relation to their individual abilities. Kids are invited to become an artist on view at the Museum by leaving finished projects on site for display, or they may take their work home.
TEEN STUDIO (Busby Family Studio, Upper Level)
Zac Monday: residency June 13, 2008–July 27, 2008
UCSD student Zac Monday is the new artist-in-residence in the Teen Studio at The New Children's Museum. His residency opens on June 13th from 1-–4pm, with a performance in the Teen Studio and the Museum's Cricket Wireless Level. Performers, moving slowly and deliberately, will showcase Zac’s whimsical, crocheted costumes.
This performance will repeat on Target Free Sunday, July 13th, featuring masks and costume elements created by teen studio visitors.
Zac’s hands-on studio project will encourage teens to create their own masking projects, using a variety of materials including yarns, fabric, aluminum foil, feathers, tempera paint, thread and sewing machine, and much more. Simultaneously, Zac will be working on a costume project in the studio that will progress each week. Visitors will have the opportunity to work directly with Zac on his project, and experience new techniques and ideas attached to costume making.
Zac will be working in the studio on Thursdays from 1–4pm and Saturdays from 1–4pm. Teens are welcome in the studio at any time during Museum hours to engage in the masking projects.
