. We stimulate imagination, inquisitiveness and innovative thinking by exhibiting participatory works of art by artists and providing a venue for art making and play. NCM brings families together in a rich educational environment that fosters creativity—blending elements of art museum, children's museum, and community center.
25 years after the opening of the original La Jolla location in 1983, The New Children's Museum reinvented itself and opened a new state-of-the-art facility designed by Rob Wellington Quigley in May of 2008. The environmentally sustainable building includes 50,000 square feet of galleries, studios, and classrooms. Located in downtown San Diego's Marina District at 200 West Island Avenue, the Museum faces Harbor Drive and is well positioned near the MTS Convention Center Trolley stop, Seaport Village and the Gaslamp Quarter.
NCM is dedicated to creating profound art experiences meaningful to children and families. Working
with internationally renowned and local emerging artists, the institution is the only museum in the United States that commissions and exhibits exceptional works of art for a family audience.
The Museum has an expansive and innovative roster of programs that allow access to families from all economic levels. Through the Community Access Program, NCM provides programs that ensure financial ability will never be a factor in a child's opportunity to experience the arts. Selected programs include Check Out The New Children's Museum, free title 1 school visits, Target Free Second Sunday, and a variety of community partnerships offering free or discounted admission.
NCM's landmark green facility and award-winning architecture inspire sustainable practices throughout the organization. From 100% recycled materials in hands-on art studios to organic food in the cafe, NCM is committed to a sustainable future.
The New Children's Museum fosters creative, unstructured play in an open-ended environment. The "whole child" approach supports both healthy bodies and creative minds. This enables us to promote and increase family and child wellness.
The Museum's pioneering legacy as a bi-national institution integrates artists and issues from our region into our exhibitions, studio projects, and classroom activities. A long-term commitment to bi-national programming enhances the ability to serve audiences representative of San Diego's diversity.
NCM's success has been built upon the generosity of donors, its vision for the San Diego community and the institutional commitment to innovation. Contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government entities ensure ongoing support for unique programs and exhibitions.
